How do YOU describe our music?

We have a very challenging time trying to describe our music, so we proposed this question to some of our select listeners, and this is what they had to say:

Please note:  If you listen to our music, we would like to include your descriptions here.  To participate, you can email your descriptions to:  Rhonda@rhondalarson.com subject: “Music Descriptions”.

“I give people your CD and say, “Whatever you think of when you think of Classical Flute Music, this isn’t that!”  You write all your own material using influences from all over the globe, and you play flutes from all over the globe.  You create an intensely personal & spiritual many-layered musical experience….When my friend heard your music and saw the cover, she said, “Wow! Warrior Flutist!  Samurai Flutist!”

“I think your music is New World Classical music.  I think of it as very American, which symbolizes through music the ‘melting pot’ that is this country (drawing from so many different musical influences from around the world), while also evoking a feeling of “freedom”, also symbolic of our country.  It is sophisticated like classical music, but new and fresh, and does not require one to already be “converted” into being able to listen to classical music.  Instead, your music is accessibly beautiful, uniquely American.  Montana-American, while I think of it, since you are from there, right?”

“Your music evokes several feelings.  One is very spiritual, because it is coming from your inner spirit.  ‘Spiritual’ in the dictionary says: a vital or animating force; the part of a human being associated with the feelings and mind; real meaning or significance----Your music is all those things, and soulful as well.  It can be playful, prayerful, haunting, incredibly versatile—your style of playing is unlike anything most of us have ever heard.  And it is universal because it encompasses so many musical themes from around the world.”

“To actually put your music within a prescribed boundary is something I’m unable to do.  Your music has no boundaries….You seem to move through a range of emotions, and I think this is the way I interpret music, by the emotion it stirs.  You offer the listener choices of emotions.  Your music, and your ability with the flute, amazes me.”

“You have a world/celtic/new age style.  World, because you are not of the mainstream (I view World music as a blend of cultures and styles). Celtic from the rhythms and sounds, the feel.  New age because it is easy to listen to in any situation, and you are not “stuck in a style”.  Your music has a very distinct style that hasn’t been imitated or borrowed.”

“Bright; intelligent; totally alive in every sense of the word; classical with a kick in the a__; filled with an unending sense of God’s presence; genuine love to the core.  I really struggle putting labels on music….I can only put the gift of your music into these snippets of phrases, like I would write it in my journal.”           ---NH

“How can you describe a thing of such wondrous beauty?  Your playing style is ethereal, soulful, and sultry.  When you add the accompaniment of the diverse musical styles of the band, it becomes both a cultural and spiritual happening….something alluding description, but must definitely be heard!  Heck, my junior high and high school kids can’t get enough of it, either!  Who da thunk it, in this rap age…

“It blends elements of Celtic, classical, Middle Eastern and progressive jazz…with the Angelic-Ethereal realm.  In short, Sacred-Pagan.”

“P.S. what does an orange taste like?”                                             ---JD

“Organic, worldly (the roots of your music, which are firmly planted in the music of our world), spiritual, evocative, sensuous, passionate, and just simply stunning!”

“Your music is so personal.  I feel it “talking” to me through your tunes.  Some make me sad (in a good way) and others make me so happy.  To me your music is an inner peace-type feeling.  You make music so alive, regardless of the feeling (sad or happy).”

“Your music is Freelance.  That is how I describe it.  Many influences, not confined into any one element.”                                                                              ----MDL

“I think of your music as being a combination of World, Renaissance and Celtic.”

“First, I absolutely love your music.  Next, I’m not sure what to call it.  It is eclectic.  I believe your music embraces spiritual journeys and movement.  Maybe you should call it “nomadic musings”.

“Being 23, I would describe it as ‘from the heart and soul’.   It is up-lifting, and also great Sunday-spending-time-with-the-family music.”
